Things I Hate About Blogging

I don’t know if you’ve noticed yet, but I’m actually a miserable bitch. However ‘miserable’ doesn’t really fit into the blogging world’s WordCloud, so we rarely talk about the bits of blogging that are actually really blady tedious/ piss us off/ make us do that eye roll disguised as puppy eyes emoji face. Here are the things I hate about blogging:

Auto DMs: Just in case following you on Twitter wasn’t enough, you decide to send me a novel’s worth of links from every social media you’ve ever even contemplated joining and remind me to check you out on all of them. Babe, as if I have time to go trace your family tree when you haven’t even followed me back yet. Plus DMs in general just feel really personal, I end up ignoring people who actually want to talk to me (apparently there are people out there that do, who knew?) because I just assume every DM I get is from the next Zoella promoting her floral Pinterest board. Stawp. 

The Merch: You can buy a notebook from Poundland for £1 (duh, Jess) or you can buy a ‘Bullshit Busy Beauty Blogger’s Book for Blogging’ from *insert kitsch sounding store that import all their products from a factory in Taiwan* for £17. Are people actually buy this stuff? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for nice stationary, but having a planner than says BLOGGER on it doesn’t make you a better blogger. If anything it makes you a sucker for consumerism. (Plus that’s 3 NYX soft matte lip creams for the price of one notebook, priorities ladies, priorities.)

Success: Blogging success is measured weirdly and I find this really annoying. A site the other day said anything less than 1,000 views a month is a failing blog. Others go by followers, how many companies you’ve worked with, the amount of money you make, number of people who advertise with you, awards you’ve won, et yawn c. Ultimately, if it’s a hobby, why is everyone so quick to play the ‘success’ card. You don’t hear the contestants on The Great Pottery Throwdown say ‘I’ve only had one person compliment my banding wheel today! I must be a failure!’ or mid-therapeutic-colouring-in-sesh ‘I haven’t been sponsored to colour in the branches of the tree, so I just can’t. do. it.’ Maybe some bloggers just enjoy blogging, without the pressure of being SUCCESSFUL.

Flatlay Instagrams: Look pretty af. But like, is there a person behind the flatlay? Do you exist or are you just a marble slate and a few editions of Vogue? Because I’m still wondering.

#FF: Now I love Follow Friday. Like my period, it always comes most unexpected and when I’m most unprepared, but I love it all the same. Or at least I would, if ‘reply to all’ wasn’t a thing. I get that you’re grateful for your shoutout but please please express your gratitude directly to your #FFer instead of also to the other 8 names in the tweet, otherwise my mentions for the day are ‘X has liked/retweeted/replied to a tweet you were mentioned in’ and tbh I don’t really care that you’re grateful for your shoutout by now I’m wishing you hadn’t been shouted out in the first place because my phone is flashing like the grotesque 2012 logo.

Pointless Polls: Now Twitter has introduced the poll feature I’m seeing more and more people do… what can only be described as Pointless Polls. ‘Should I give up blogging yes or no?’ is one. ‘Shall I blog while I’m on holiday?’ is another, like ffs bab take a break! If you wanted to blog that desperately on hols then would you really be running a poll for it. ‘Shall I start a YouTube channel?’ As if people are going to say no for any reason other than the question is too annoying for a serious answer. Yet many of these people claim ‘I blog for me’ (as in themselves… not me lol) well clearly you don’t. If you want to start a YouTube/quit your blog/go on hollybobs then do it!! Don’t wait for randomers online, like me, to control your lives for you. With that said, I love the polls that are like ‘Which post should I post next?’ because it feels like at the end of GBBO when they say ‘next week’ ft the lil preview of next week’s ep. So don’t stawp them.
