I don’t know if you’ve noticed yet, but I’m actually a miserable bitch. However ‘miserable’ doesn’t really fit into the blogging world’s WordCloud, so we rarely talk about the bits of blogging that are actually really blady tedious/ piss us off/ make us do that eye roll disguised as puppy eyes emoji face. Here are the things I hate about blogging:
Auto DMs: Just in case following you on Twitter wasn’t enough, you decide to send me a novel’s worth of links from every social media you’ve ever even contemplated joining and remind me to check you out on all of them. Babe, as if I have time to go trace your family tree when you haven’t even followed me back yet. Plus DMs in general just feel really personal, I end up ignoring people who actually want to talk to me (apparently there are people out there that do, who knew?) because I just assume every DM I get is from the next Zoella promoting her floral Pinterest board. Stawp.
The Merch: You can buy a notebook from Poundland for £1 (duh, Jess) or you can buy a ‘Bullshit Busy Beauty Blogger’s Book for Blogging’ from *insert kitsch sounding store that import all their products from a factory in Taiwan* for £17. Are people actually buy this stuff? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for nice stationary, but having a planner than says BLOGGER on it doesn’t make you a better blogger. If anything it makes you a sucker for consumerism. (Plus that’s 3 NYX soft matte lip creams for the price of one notebook, priorities ladies, priorities.)
Success: Blogging success is measured weirdly and I find this really annoying. A site the other day said anything less than 1,000 views a month is a failing blog. Others go by followers, how many companies you’ve worked with, the amount of money you make, number of people who advertise with you, awards you’ve won, et yawn c. Ultimately, if it’s a hobby, why is everyone so quick to play the ‘success’ card. You don’t hear the contestants on The Great Pottery Throwdown say ‘I’ve only had one person compliment my banding wheel today! I must be a failure!’ or mid-therapeutic-colouring-in-sesh ‘I haven’t been sponsored to colour in the branches of the tree, so I just can’t. do. it.’ Maybe some bloggers just enjoy blogging, without the pressure of being SUCCESSFUL.
Flatlay Instagrams: Look pretty af. But like, is there a person behind the flatlay? Do you exist or are you just a marble slate and a few editions of Vogue? Because I’m still wondering.
#FF: Now I love Follow Friday. Like my period, it always comes most unexpected and when I’m most unprepared, but I love it all the same. Or at least I would, if ‘reply to all’ wasn’t a thing. I get that you’re grateful for your shoutout but please please express your gratitude directly to your #FFer instead of also to the other 8 names in the tweet, otherwise my mentions for the day are ‘X has liked/retweeted/replied to a tweet you were mentioned in’ and tbh I don’t really care that you’re grateful for your shoutout by now I’m wishing you hadn’t been shouted out in the first place because my phone is flashing like the grotesque 2012 logo.
Pointless Polls: Now Twitter has introduced the poll feature I’m seeing more and more people do… what can only be described as Pointless Polls. ‘Should I give up blogging yes or no?’ is one. ‘Shall I blog while I’m on holiday?’ is another, like ffs bab take a break! If you wanted to blog that desperately on hols then would you really be running a poll for it. ‘Shall I start a YouTube channel?’ As if people are going to say no for any reason other than the question is too annoying for a serious answer. Yet many of these people claim ‘I blog for me’ (as in themselves… not me lol) well clearly you don’t. If you want to start a YouTube/quit your blog/go on hollybobs then do it!! Don’t wait for randomers online, like me, to control your lives for you. With that said, I love the polls that are like ‘Which post should I post next?’ because it feels like at the end of GBBO when they say ‘next week’ ft the lil preview of next week’s ep. So don’t stawp them.
So Teamales, what pisses you off about Blogging? Because as much as I love it, there are bits that make me mega cringe. I hope you could relate to at least a couple (mainly to make me seem less miserable) so remember to comment below.
Oh my goshhhhhh your blog is SO relatable!! 😇 I love your content!

DO IT!! And tell me when you have so I can be the only one positive comment while everyone else bans you from the community
I joke, most of us can relate to these things so I think it’s a pretty safe post to do (be careful though, if they start egging your house don’t blame me) x

The Auto DMs rank right up there with the Instagram Unfollowers when it comes to what annoys me most! I actually downloaded and app to track who unfollows me so I can catch each and every one of those buggers who play the ‘I’ll follow you just so you follow me and boost my numbers then unfollow you the next day’ game…. Jokes on them, I’m onto you!

SAME!! I feel so powerful like ‘sorry @ freefollower92 you’re pissing me off now’ *unfollows* It would be so much better if we could just follow accounts we liked instead of it all being strategic.

I agree with the auto dm’s, success and selling items points so much, like who cares how many views your blog gets a month, if you’re loving what you’re doing, that should be enough. Plus no one starts off by getting 5k blog views a month, that can take forever
LikeLiked by 1 person
I keep seeing people atm saying things like ‘just got 100 followers on here! Not a lot for some but huge for me!’ And yeah maybe we can all agree that 100 isn’t a massive number but it’s still an achievement that you shouldn’t dumb down in order to bring yourself down. Similarly, if you replace ‘100’ for idk ‘5k’ suddenly I’m like ‘wow if they don’t think 5k is a big number then what is?’ When are you a successful blogger if the numbers keep changing? Ultimately there will always be people more and less successful than you so you’ve just got to roll with it x

yeah exactly, I remember when I hit 100 followers I was super happy, success isn’t done by numbers and I wish people would stop thinking it is x

haha you always give me a good laugh Jess! so many of these things are very relatable. The thing annoys me the most is, when i just started blogging a few weeks ago and tried to do some research, and found about thousands of bloggers prommoting their content like ‘hey look how i made all these money by blog about how you should blog’ and it feels kind of spamy… and then there are those who promote their blog contents on pinterest with a neat and professioanl graphic and once i click in there is like a 250 words blogpost with no meaningful information. 🙄

Oh my gosh so true. I spend so long making my blog posts educational or funny or taking photos and then someone comes along like SOCKS ARE GREAT and has 2827363 views and it makes me really sad. I mean, well done to them but also I want some love. Also I know what you mean about ‘how to blog’ guides. I have a book that’s like BECOME A BLOGGING MILLIONAIRE and it’s a bit like…surely if everyone read it we’d all be millionaires? I can’t even bring myself to read it. I’d rather try it my own way. Thanks for the comment gal I love your input! X

xD that’s exactly how i feel when I’m on instagram! But I don’t want to pay 5£ know their ‘secret to blogging success’ anyway and there is really no point comparing with other bloggers. It’s much more important to stay true to my contents and enjoy the learning process. 👍

I agree with you on most things but don’t get how the “success” part of blogging affects you if it isn’t something you are interested in.. If you were a blogger looking to become a big blogger and make a living out of it I would understand, but as for you it’s just a hobby and for fun I don’t understand how it can affect you..

Haha it shouldn’t affect anyone but I find that there’s such a huge pressure to be successful when blogging. In other hobbies like playing an instrument or a sport you can just enjoy them, but whenever you mention you blog people immediately say ‘how many followers do you have?’ Or ‘what are your stats?’ And it doesn’t feel as chilled as I want it too x thanks for reading

I hate when I have those moments when I don’t know why I’m doing it at all lol. It’s a hobby but it’s easy to wonder what else it’s all about! Deep down I know but it is easy to forget the reasoning even though I do love it and it has helped me form connections with others! Love a good rant-y post! Haha 💕

I completely feel this too. I blog as a hobby but then sometimes when no one reads it I’m like ‘what’s the point??’ And forget that I’m doing it for myself. I guess it’s completely normal though as its a competitive industry and its so overwhelming because everyone else seems to have 826215 more followers than me, no matter how hard I work! X thanks for ranting with me b

Exactly. Or I wonder that if I’m not making money it must be a waste of time or something, because it takes a lot of time and energy. But so does painting, playing an instrument etc. It’s not always about money or views but you’re so right that it’s easy to forget, I always feel you have to prove something. I’ll just continue to relax, and enjoy writing and reading others’ blogs and try not to lose perspective!

This is a super honest post. And super relatable. I completely agree on the measuring success side and DM on twitter. I quite love making flatlay but they are like 10% of my instagram. I never thought about buying blogger merch though. but yeah, £17 for something made in Taiwan… please! Thanks for sharing! xx Corinne

Loved this! I actually sat giggling through some of this because im the exact same and my thoughts are the same when it comes to most things! I will admit the #FF thing I sometimes quickly reply and realise ive tagged everyone else in which I myself do find annoying sometimes so working on that one! everything gets so hyped up just be you and do/write/video about what makes you happy! 🙂

Omg this literally happened the other day I was like I HATE #FF TAGGING and then I accidentally tagged everyone so I had to evacuate Twitter for a bit out of embarrassment. I try my best to be a good blogger but sometimes I make mistakes too. Thanks for reading and laughing(!!) best compliment x

Loved that! The blogging “success” thing really annoys me! I’m a very new blog, only been around for 2 months, and sometimes I’ll get like 5 views and sometimes I’ll get 80 which is amazing for me – I’m still amazed that I got to 100 followers! However sometimes I get people online talk about how anything less than 1000 is failure and it can be a little disheartening. I blog for me, but I still deem the fact that anyone wants to read my blog a success! Omg and don’t even get me started on auto dms…

Yesss I completely agree- especially because building a following for a blog is so hard. It’s not even ‘the longer you do it the more popular you’ll be’ which is a lie fed to us by basically everyone. You have to have regular content, advertising, scheduled tweets, etc and those are things that ‘time’ really doesn’t make a difference with (sadly, otherwise I’d be a millionaire by now because I’m into my second year hehe). Keep doing what you’re doing b xo thanks for reading

Every. Single. One. Even though I forget to reply to just the FFer, it is a bit annoying that all my Friday notifications come from them. I like flatlays, I think it shows the products well, but when it’s every single picture, I actually can’t tell people’s feeds apart. Love this post! x

Oh you’re one of THEM *never FFs you again*
Jk jk I’m probably guilty as well, especially because sometimes you want to show off how competitively grateful you are to everyone else in the tweet lol. I agree with flatlays too, they’re very pretty but when everyone is wrapping a NYX lip cream in rose gold fairy lights on a marble slab it gets a bit samey. Glad we twin on these xo

As much as I think they are great for getting a new audience and finding new blogs. I find comment swaps a little forced and too much pressure. That you end up with loads of quotes saying great post Hun! I find myself writing this on beauty blogs about lipsticks I don’t care about because I feel bad! It’s a bit too false. I loved this post and agree with it all, well done for your honesty! X

YES so true! I hadn’t even thought of comment swaps but they’re another double edged sword. On one hand I want their comments, on the other I don’t want them if they’re not going to actually read and engage what I’ve written about, especially if their blog is something I know nothing about like fitness or beauty. My other struggle is I genuinely can’t comment on some blogs so I always look like I haven’t done my bit when technology us actually the fail whale xo

fkin yes to automatic DM’s and those blady reply to all’ers *rolls eyes*. I feel like I’m probs a culprit of the old pointless poll, but tbh I’ve usually already decided what I’m gonna do and am just intrigued to see how many people are gonna be rude and answer ‘no rly don’t think u should do this’ lol. P.S I can confirm I am v much liking Grimes!!!!!!!! Loved the post as usual babe xxx

I don’t mind yours though because it gives me the chance to say No to all your genuinely good ideas and see if you take any notice :)) ps GRIMES! Hope you’re ready for a lifetime of ‘I love grimes’ ‘same! I’ll go put on some skepta now’ #notwhatimeant (although tbh loves me some grime too so I’m haps) Love ya xx

Hahahaha, I basically agree with all of these, ESPESH AUTO DMS. So off putting. Totally agree about the merch, I could spend my life looking at all the cute shit Paperchase has to offer but like you say, yes I would much rather buy make-up than spend a fortune on one notebook from an ‘indie’ company that orders from Aliexpress. Also I hoard far too many notebooks as is.. Must admit, I’m a sucker for flatlay Instagrams. A lot of the time I find them more interesting than personal Instagrams (yours being an exception, obv) – I, for one, don’t have an exciting life outside of blogging so I prefer to chuck a pretty flatlay down than share me sitting in my jammies with a bar of chocolate watching Markiplier videos, kwam? hahahaha. Plus now that I have a ‘theme’ of sorts, I feel like posting anything outside of makeup selfys & flatlays looks weird, lol.

Haha I’ll let you off because your blog and Twitter and YouTube is like beautiful Scottish personality filled stuff so you’re allowed to have a marble IG 😉 I’m probs just jealous tbh because I can’t flatlay to save my life everything ends up looking really shadowy and like I’ve just emptied my bag onto a plastic table (which is what I’ve done but how do I make it look like I haven’t done that?) I’m deffo feeling the stationary addition, I have a huge trunk worth of notebooks and I never use the pages in order I just open it randomly and write where I’ve opened, so I can never properly tell if it’s full or not. Aka need to buy another one just in case. Thanks for reading bb n GET WELL SOON PLS xox
